Wal-Mart is a company specializing in retail, having its headquarters in the United States, founded by Sam Walton and now headed by his eldest son, S. Robson Walton. Founded under this name in 1962, it expanded rapidly in Arkansas, then dominated the United States to begin to internationalize from 1991. In Europe, stores are present in Great Britain under the ASDA. Wal-Mart now addressing the Asian market. Based in China since 1996, the group employed some thirty thousand workers in this country in 2006 [3]. It is also present in Japan under the Seiyu. In 2005, 20 million customers enrolled in Wal-Mart on average each day.
COMPETING COMPANIES
Dell is a competitor to Wal-Mart because the company sells electronic equipment. First of all, Dell is an american compagny, currently the second largest computer manufacturer in the world behind Hewlett-Packard. Its headquarters is based in Round Rock in Texas. Even if Dell Computer is best known for the PC that designs, manufactures and sells to individuals and professionals, it is also present in the markets for enterprise server systems, backup and data storage and equipment specific to networks. Dell also offers software and peripherals like printers, digital cameras, and much more.
Secondly, Target Corporation, located in Minneapolis in Minnesota, is the fifth volume distributor in the United States, but the competitor #1 of Wal-Mart. The company is ranked 33rd in rank of Fortune 500 in 2007. Target operates only in the U.S. market.
